A Cathedral Mindset

As we look forward in the life of the Church, we need perspective that can carry us into the next stage of our journey. A cathedral mindset is needed, one of creating and working toward long-term goals for future generations to enjoy. Think about it. Most famous cathedrals are built over centuries, the designer/visionary never seeing the finished cathedral. However, the length of time to build a cathedral correlates with the magnificence of the structure. It is built to outlast us.

Motor City Church is in the building process. We are building God’s house, not just for us, but for our children, and their children, and their children that follow. In the process, we bless the community, the region and even the world. Long-term vision is vital to building a cathedral mindset. If we keep a pioneering spirit, we won’t accept comfort and contentment, thereby missing what God has for us in this stage of our church’s life. Even though we've crossed an ocean there is a wilderness to conquer.

Hab 2:2-3 commands us to write out the vision and make it plain so that those may run who read it. It points to what is coming and doesn't lie. It comes right on time and does not tarry. Vision keeps us focused and helps us know what we're trying to accomplish. Vision gives us fuel. It motivates us to keep serving and moving forward. Vision helps us finish well. Vision is critical to success. We must remember that vision without action is just a dream and action without vision is just passing time. But with vision and action we can change the world. If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves. Cathedral mindset compels us to pass on the dream. What we are doing is not about us. We don't leave the vision to interpretation. We communicate fully, not just delivering pieces of information but communicating the vision completely - the why, the how, the perspective, the hope.

Our vision at Motor City Church is fourfold: Know God, Find Freedom, Discover Your Purpose, Make a Difference. We exist for the benefit of non-members and we do all we can to make it easy for people to come to Jesus. Life happens and we find freedom in relationships. Through process, through steps, our relationships with God and with each other deepen and we find wholeheartedness. We discover our purpose, understanding that we each have gifts that we can use to minister. We discover leaders as we equip and then we make a difference together. A cathedral mindset improves our outlook. We can forgo the applause of men and the temporal satisfactions of this life and work toward a vision that's bigger than us. It takes the commitment of a lifetime and will make a significant contribution, a legacy. Together, think what we can do.
